Dr. sc. Giuseppe Civitarese, Senior Scientist, Head of the Experimental Oceanography Group (ExO) Istituto Nazionale di Oceanografia e di Geofisica Sperimentale - OGS (Italy), Project investigator

His research is principally devoted to the study of biogeochemical processes in the marine environment, in particular in the Mediterranean basin. His interests concern the study of some of the peculiarity of the Mediterranean, i. e. its altered N:P ratio, its oligotrophy, the mass and heat budgets through its straits, etc. Recently, he has focussed his activity on the formalization of the mechanism called Adriatic-Ionian Bimodal Oscillating System (BiOS) driving the decadal variability of the Eastern Mediterranean thermohaline cell. At present, his attention is focussed on the important implications of this mechanism on the biogeochemistry and biology of the Eastern Mediterranean. He is also involved on the assessment of pressure, knowledge and data gaps in Southern Europeas Sea in the frame of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive.
